The Importance of First Impressions

I recently met the brother of a friend of mine.  I think my friend is a really great person, so by association her brother already had points with me before I even met him.  However, after we were introduced he said something to his sister that was not personally offensive to me, but was so immature and thoughtless that it immediately solidified a negative impression in my mind about his personality.  To this day I try to avoid interacting with him so I don’t have to pretend to like him in front of my friend, his sister.

Who knows, maybe the guy is actually really nice and just had a moment of idiocy.  Don’t we all?  But that one comment made such a strong impression on me that I really think it damaged my opinion of him beyond repair.  I’m sure he has no idea of what I think of him, and probably wouldn’t even care.  But it just goes to show how quickly we size each other up.  Always be aware of the impact that what you say and do has on other people who are listening and watching.
